Goodbye message from Dominic MacAskill

UNISON Cymru Wales has said goodbye to an inspirational regional secretary and dedicated champion of public service workers. Dominic MacAskill is retiring today and Jess Turner is the new incoming regional secretary. You can read Dominic’s message to UNISON members below.

Dominic MacAskill is retiring as UNISON Cymru Wales regional secretary

Dear all,

One last communication from me on my last day as your regional secretary.

I have detailed below the social media statement I made on Friday:

“Being a UNISON Wales activist and organiser over the last few decades has been the greatest honour and privilege for me, working collectively to defend our invaluable public services and the dedicated workers who tirelessly and selflessly serve our communities.

I retire in the secure knowledge that I am leaving UNISON Wales in safe hands; a confident vibrant trade union growing in strength to face the necessary battles ahead and win.  The struggle continues!”

I wanted to add to this by saying: I have appreciated the support and comradeship of so many of you over the years and I also appreciate the difficult job you all face juggling your UNISON commitments with your job roles and personal lives, in order to defend and advance our UNISON members interests; a last big thank you to you all.

I wish you all well in your future endeavours and I look forward to seeing you all individually and collectively grow from strength to strength.

I am now handing over the baton to Jess Turner, your new UNISON Wales regional secretary, I am confident that you will welcome her in her new role and work well together to ensure that UNISON Wales continues to develop and grow in strength.

Dominic with incoming regional secretary, Jess Turner

Jess will especially need your support and patience in the first period of her new role as she gets the Regional Management Team back up to full strength and negotiates our region through the difficult period up to the completion and roll out of the NEC led staffing review.

I am sure that for many of us our paths will cross again during some progressive or labour movement campaign (as the struggle continues!) or in a more informal setting.

But until then, I bid you all a fond farewell.

Comradely best wishes,

Dominic

Dominic MacAskill
