UNISON has welcomed the appointment of a Mental Health Minister by Welsh Government as an important step forward in tacking mental health and wellbeing in Wales.
Carmen Bezzina, UNISON Cymru Wales mental health lead, said:
“UNISON has long campaigned in Wales for the need for a Mental Health Minister to form part of the Welsh Government Cabinet, so the announcement that this post has now been created is very welcome.
“Protecting and supporting our mental health and wellbeing has never been more important. The COVID pandemic has shone a spotlight on the importance of mental health and wellbeing, and we look forward to working with the new Welsh Minister on these important issues.
“There are many workers across public services who continue to work tirelessly in hospitals, schools, social care, and local authorities across Wales despite the fact we still don’t have a full understanding of this virus or its capabilities. This obviously comes at an emotional cost which needs to be considered. We congratulate the Minister on her appointment and look forward to working together on these fundamental issues.”
