Bold leadership needed for Wales, says UNISON

UNISON Cymru/Wales regional secretary Jess Turner

Commenting on Eluned Morgan’s speech to Welsh Labour in Cardiff Bay today (Tuesday), UNISON Cymru secretary Jess Turner said:

“The speech gives confidence devolution won’t be compromised, and the Welsh Labour leader will confront UK decision-making if it doesn’t work for Wales.

“Political leaders must be bold and show they’re prepared to stand up for Wales.

“Wales has been short-changed for far too long and the ongoing funding restraint is unsustainable. Fifteen years of underfunding has put intolerable strain on public services. Workers across Wales are consistently being asked to deliver more for less.

“Funding arrangements for Wales must be urgently reviewed.

“The country deserves a fair funding settlement that will allow everyone to benefit from strong and responsive services to all communities, with staff who are properly rewarded for the essential work they do.

“The pledges made today are to be welcomed and Welsh Labour is urged to continue to show the confident leadership needed and trust in the ‘Welsh way’ of social-partnership working that’s been developed.”
