Reform poses major threat to public services, says UNISON

Senedd

Staff delivering vital public services across Wales are being urged to use their vote to defend the NHS, councils and care services in the Senedd election, and to reject parties that threaten their future, says UNISON today (Wednesday).

The union says the outcome of the election will be crucial for the future of services people rely on. Reform’s approach would pose a significant risk to public services in Wales, adds UNISON, warning that policies linked to cuts, reduced public spending and a greater role for the private sector could weaken services and increase pressures on staff.

UNISON Cymru regional secretary Jess Turner said: “Public services are the backbone of Wales. Every day, staff keep the NHS running, support schools, care for loved ones and hold communities together. But services are under real strain after years of underfunding and rising costs.

“Reform’s approach would put those services at serious risk. Cuts, privatisation and reduced investment would mean fewer staff, longer waits and reduced support for communities.

“This election will shape who stands up for public services and the people who rely on them. Voting is how communities defend hospitals, councils and care services, and how fair pay and proper investment are secured.

“Wales needs a government that values staff and strengthens public services, not one that risks cuts or putting essential services in the wrong hands. On 7 May, there’s a chance to choose a stronger, fairer Wales and protect the services everyone depends on.”
