NHS Wales staff likely to be disappointed with this year’s pay rise, says UNISON

Commenting on the announcement today (Thursday) that NHS staff in Wales are to receive a 3.6% pay rise this year, UNISON Cymru head of health Tanya Bull said:

“The pay rise barely matches inflation and the money will be landing in pay packets late.

“A reliance on the slow, outdated and unnecessary pay review body process has once again failed to deliver.

“It does nothing to address the pay restoration the Welsh Government has committed to. With no additional consequential money, Wales is being failed once again by the funding formula, and it is NHS workers who are paying the price.

“Direct talks between ministers and unions in Scotland showed what’s possible, with an 8% two-year deal and an inflation-proof guarantee. NHS staff in Wales will be wondering why they are being shortchanged.

“Nurses, porters, paramedics, healthcare assistants, cleaners and other workers on Agenda for Change contracts will feel less valued than their doctor colleagues. That will generate more discontent across an already demoralised workforce.”
