Young Welsh people urged ‘Vote Remain and protect your rights’

The future of young people is at stake with the EU referendum

Young workers’ future standard of living could be damaged if we leave the EU, say members at Wales’ largest trade union, UNISON.

Timothy Burke, Chair of UNISON Cymru/Wales Young Members said,

“It’s vital that young workers vote in the EU Referendum. A vote to leave would be disastrous for workers’ rights and young workers would be hit particularly hard. Leaving Europe would give this Conservative Government the chance to water-down or remove all the employment rights which originate from Europe: maximum working time; paid holidays; rights for part-time workers and maternity and paternity rights. These are things that have made a difference to every family and workplace.

Timothy, who is from Wrexham, continued:

“Young workers have been disproportionately hit by the austerity policies of the Tory Government in Westminster. Each time workers’ rights are attacked it is young workers who are immediately affected, from unemployment or job insecurity, to poor pay and poor career prospects. We suffer from attacks on in-work benefits, zero hour contracts and difficulties with housing. We need stronger worker protections and if we left the EU it would be our generation and the next who would suffer. That’s why we are urging all our young members and young people in general to register to vote and vote to remain. Our future is at stake.”
