Torfaen school support worker wins Cymru Stars in Our Schools award, says UNISON

A family liaison officer from Torfaen has today (Friday) been named the Cymru winner of UNISON’s Stars in Our Schools award, the union says.

Tina Goodland, who works at Nant Celyn Primary School, was selected from nominations across Wales for the annual award that recognises the dedication of school support staff who help children learn and keep schools running smoothly.

She was nominated by parents and colleagues for her compassion, commitment to the whole school community and exceptional support for families.

Tina was commended for being “the heart of the school”, and offering kindness, respect and practical support to parents, pupils and staff by those who put her forward.

Her work as a mental health first aider, ability to provide calm guidance during tough moments and dedication were also highlighted.

UNISON Cymru regional secretary Jess Turner said: “This annual celebration is all about recognising the incredible contribution school support staff make to children’s lives across Wales.

“Tina’s nominations stood out because they showed someone who gives her whole heart to her role. Parents described her as a source of kindness, understanding and respect, while staff said she holds the school community together.

“Support staff are the glue that holds schools together. They help keep children safe, make sure families have the help they need and create the warm, welcoming environment for pupils to thrive. Tina is a shining example of that and a deserving winner of this year’s Cymru award.”

Head teacher of Nant Celyn Primary School Keri Smith said: “Tina, our family liaison officer, is an extraordinary colleague who goes above and beyond to support families during challenging times.

“Her patience, compassion, and unwavering dedication to the wellbeing of our children and the wider school community make her an invaluable part of our team. We could not be prouder of her.”

Cabinet secretary for education Lynne Neagle said: “I’m delighted to support UNISON Cymru’s Stars in Our Schools 2025.

“School support staff are the backbone of our education system. Whether you provide school meals, work as a classroom assistant, support learners with additional needs, keep libraries or IT systems running, or provide finance and administration, your contribution ensures children in Wales have the best possible start in life.

“Tina represents the very best of our education workforce. Her care for children, families and colleagues makes a real difference every single day.”
