- My Idea:
Please find attached my submission for the Unison Cymru poster. It is a papercut design created from a single sheet of paper with coloured paper then glued behind. I have included a picture of the papercut without the colours, so that you can see how it was made. The silhouetted figures show some of the jobs carried out by your members, and represent the diversity of the people who carry out this work. I have included bilingual phrases which I picked out from the brief and website which I felt were important, for example ‘solidarity’ and ‘community.’ I especially liked the phrase ‘A beacon for equality’, which gave me the idea of the Davy lamp, acting as a beacon in the centre of the poster. I thought this was a nice link to the prominent union history in Wales, and combined with the yellow braiding to the sides, this is a reference to the trade union banners which have been proudly held aloft throughout Wales’ history. The purple, green and white are, of course, the colours of women’s suffrage, and Unison Cymru’s colours, so seemed the appropriate choice.
- About me:
I am a part-time art teacher in a primary school and I love having the opportunity to enthuse young minds about the most important element of their schooling… the expressive arts! I am also a freelance visual artist working mainly through the medium of papercutting. Being somewhat of a luddite, my work is created the old fashioned way using a scalpel. I was excited to read of this opportunity, since it aligns perfectly with my values. Much of my work centres around Welsh culture, and being a proud Newportonian, specifically Newport culture, which is a breed all of its own! Our tradition of protest and rebellion, and of standing up for what is right is very close to my heart. I have included some examples of my work which embody this, but further work can be viewed via the following:
