UNISON responds to Darren Millar NHS criticism

Responding to Darren Millar’s comments about the Betsi Cadwaladr health board, Donna Hutton, UNISON Cymru Wales head of health said,

“Darren Millar would do well to pause for thought before firing of a press release rubbishing Betsi Cadwaladr health board yet again. His words are insulting to every single member of staff in the Welsh NHS.

“Why are staff being asked to close windows and turn off lights to save money? Why have health workers – along with other public service workers, not had a pay rise for seven years? It is Darren’s own Conservative party in London that has starved public services of money through brutal spending cuts and squeezed the funding available to Wales and the Welsh NHS.

“Darren Millar is taking a cheap shot at executives for proposing money-saving measures when he should be bending the ear of Theresa May to tell her austerity isn’t working in Wales and demand more money for our NHS.

“Yes, we want action to bring down agency spending and it’s important executive salaries are proportionate but come on Darren, you are missing the real culprits here – the Conservatives. Your party has caused and continues to cause financial hardship in Welsh public services.”
